What Does an IRS Certified Acceptance Agent Do?

A Certified Acceptance Agent (CAA) is an individual or entity authorized by the IRS to assist applicants in obtaining ITINs, including reviewing and authenticating certain supporting documents.

The Role

What a CAA can assist with

  • Reviewing an applicant's eligibility and federal tax purpose
  • Preparing and reviewing Form W-7
  • Reviewing supporting identity and foreign-status documentation
  • Authenticating eligible documents under IRS rules
  • Preparing the Certificate of Accuracy where applicable
  • Submitting the completed application package to the IRS
  • Communicating with the IRS regarding application issues
  • Receiving copies of certain IRS notices, where applicable
What a CAA does not do

CAA services help applicants prepare and submit an ITIN application correctly, but the IRS alone reviews the application and determines whether an ITIN will be issued. A CAA cannot override, expedite outside normal IRS procedures, or guarantee the outcome of an IRS decision.

Practical Benefit

Why work with a CAA

Because a CAA can authenticate certain eligible supporting documents, applicants working with a CAA often do not need to mail original documents, such as a passport, directly to the IRS. This reduces the risk of losing important original documents in the mail and can simplify the process for applicants located outside the United States.
